To restore your backed-up data, you must log into your Elpha Secure Portal and find your machine on the Device Management page (try browsing or using the search bar).

Begin the restoration process:

  1. Choose the device and click Download Backup on the File Backup card.

  2. Click Request New Backup to initiate the data download. You will also be able to access and download previous backups from this window.

  3. Specify the files you would like to retrieve by selecting a date range. The default will be two weeks prior to today's date.

    Note: You must select dates using the calendar provided (you won't be able to enter dates manually).

  4. Click Request New Backup to confirm and begin download.

    Note: Pending status means that the backup is still generating. If the file size is rather large, you can leave this window open and check back again later.

  5. Once the backup is ready, download the ZIP file that will appear in the window at the bottom left.

    Note: File name will end in .zip and feature a combination of random letters.

    Extract your files:

  6. Once the download is complete, here's how to extract the contents of the ZIP file:

    1. Navigate to your Downloads folder.

    2. Double-click the ZIP file (1).

    3. Confirm the desired backed up folders are listed. In the example below, the Users folder (2) was backed up, containing all the files within three subfolders labeled "Documents", "My Files", and "Additional File Folder".

      Once you've located the backed up files, you can discard the ZIP file (1).

    Note: Don't be alarmed if you can't access the files — they're still encrypted and will need to be decrypted to open and read the contents.

  7. Go to the Elpha Secure icon in your system tray (1), select Show agent window (2), click the Backup tab, and then Restore from backup (3) to begin the decryption process.

  8. Click Use key from this machine.

    Note: You won't be able to type anything into this field. We've saved the Elpha Secure key in our software.

    8a. If your Elpha Secure software has been compromised in the ransomware attack, click Use saved recovery key instead.

    In this case, you'll need to use the original backup key you saved when you created an account in your Elpha Secure Portal. Copy that key into the Elpha Secure key field.

  9. Click Decrypt folder.

  10. Go to Downloads (or where you would find the encrypted folder) and select the folder to decrypt. In our example, the Users folder in Downloads is the encrypted folder we're looking for.

    Note: Contents will be decrypted and placed into a separate folder with the suffix ".decrypted".

  11. When decryption is complete, you'll receive a notification. Click Close to exit out of the backup restore window.

  12. You can now access your decrypted files!
